Alcatel-Lucent hits 10 Gbps over copper

40th anniversary of first cellular phone call

Cellular mobile telephony is 40 years old. Martin Cooper, general manager of Motorola's Communications Systems Division made the first cellular call, to his rival at AT&T's Bell Labs, from the streets of New York City on April 3 1973.

Today 10 July marks the fiftieth anniversary of the launch of Telstar 1, the world's first communications satellite, by Bell Labs and NASA.
